Nick Clegg has invited us to name some of the loony laws which infringe on liberty and we would like repealed – ending a ban on marrying horses was the first thing that sprang to the mind of some!
Every day I am reminded of one law I would like changed which resulted in my newsagent no longer being able to employ newspaper boys (or girls) to deliver my morning read – a weighty load for them as I still have four morning papers, and my evening paper is delivered by a trolley pushing youth.
My newsagent was expected to be responsible for the safety of the deliverer of my morning news, and this included checking his bicycle lights and tyres and ensuring he wore a cycle helmet. How daft is that! It meant my daily delivery service had to come to an abrupt end, my daily treat which I had always looked forward to.
Am I alone in wanting to hear that thud on my doormat again each morning with the papers piled high? Or are there any other laws which drive you round the bend that you would like to see repealed?
Now then, who on earth would possibly want to marry a horse……
*This is a link to the site where you can make your suggestions, like I have, regarding my newspaper deliveries.

Ellee I couldn’t disagree with you more: we need to keep the law against marrying horses as if we don’t some daft muppet will want to do exactly that. We’ve already got the civil partnership, which would have been a great idea if it were not a covert marriage for homosexuals (cue torrent of abuse accusing me of homophobia). Can you imagine the outrage of the fluffy animal brigade if a vicar refused to bless the union of Dobbin and Black Beauty? How mean, how uncharitable?
Agree with you about paper delivery though – political correctness gone mad.
Pip, I don’t want to see the law against marrying horses repealed. I was just stating that others had asked for this after Nick Clegg made his announcement, and I thought it would be amusing in the headline. 🙂
I’m glad you agree about the newspaper boys!
Ellee, I confess to some levity in my comment. I wanted to agree with you about paper delivery but I think I should strive for a more Dame Camila Batmanghelidjh approach than a grey suited one.
The first time anyone suggested a silly law to trpeal, someone would pipe up with a reason why it should be kept.
