I have no idea how paedophiles are presently treated, but obviously it has not been successful. In order to deal with the “scale of the problem”, it has been recommended that some child sex offenders should receive a police caution and then be managed within the community instead of sent to jail.
Jim Gamble, of the Child Exploiation and Online Protection Centre has recommended this as a practical way of dealing with the huge scale of the problem.
This would indicate that the problem has not been managed successfully so far. It is a cheapskate way of dealing with these offenders as our prisons are full.
Whichever way you look at it, viewing child porn is sickening and is often the tipping point for child abuse. I want tougher sentencing to be imposed, with treatment, not softer options. It has to be remembered that if there was no demand for child pornography, innocent children would be spared this horrific abuse. Where is the data to prove that a police caution and treatment in the community is successful?
My local paper reports this week of an 11-year-old schoolgirl’s terror when a man tried to lure her into his van. Wife in the North recently described how a man tried to pick up a young child outside a school in a nearby village.
This ludicrous idea will send shivers and feelings of outrage amongst our civilised society.
The argument seemed to be that there is so much child abuse that the Police could not hope to protect every child by the usual methods of catching them and taking them out of society. They also needed an intermediate approach for viewers .
The problem is that their figures are all conjecture obviously and it being the Police probably close to lies . I suspect the truth is they would like to lock them up but actually cannot cope with the bureaucracy and dare not say they are unable to do their job. Highly suspicious of this
The scale of this problem is really frightening. I think I agree with newmania.
Cautioned? that is disgusting. They should all be killed! That is kinder than locking ’em up and throwing away the key (the only other option). Also if you keep people like that alive in prison they live on to infect others with their warped ideas. So kill ’em all! I say. And I mean it!
BTW I reckon the internet has a lot to answer for. If kiddie porn wasn’t so widely available we wouldn’t see so many people venturng down this vile road. What gets me the most about them from what I’ve seen on one telly documentary in particular was how SORRY these monsters felt for themSELVES. I mean come on ..!
Many thanks for your message on mine. No I barely ever MOVE when I’m asleep let alone fall out of bed – which made the other night all the more bemusing …
Doesn’t Gamble live in the real world? No one likes these creatures, even the criminals.
“Our prisons are full” – exactly. That’s the root of this story. And also the story last week about the 7 thugs who launched an unprovoked attack on two vulnerable men in the middle of an East Anglia town (in full view of CCTV). And also why judges are encouraged not to hand down custodial sentences.
The fact is that our jails are over 99.5% full – stats / links here if interested.
Brown has steadfastly refused to pay for more prison space. Prison is our only sanction against lawbreakers.
So much for “tough on crime”.
..and contrary to myth a criminal in this country is less likely to go to Prison than anywhere lese in Europe . We just have far far more crime. I think its overcrowding which makes plenty of sense of the immigration driven population boom we are experiencing. 75% of the country want immigration dramatically cut but no Party dares say it . Thanks for ruining this country you PC thought fascists.
Thanks a lot
Crime is out of control and paedophilia is part of that. Tony Blair’s “tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime” were sensible words, but again – poor delivery. Labour are not tough on crime – and this is just another example. Prisons are overflowing, not because they are getting tougher, but because there is more serious crime (such as paedophilia and violent crime).
As for tough on the causes – no evidence based solutions are properly in place (such as residential drug rehabilitation), just soft stuff that doesn’t work. And the major “cause” of crime is not being on benefits, but is a lack of deterrent, and lack of incentive to work. In the case of paedophiles – deterrent will work for most who have tendencies, and the rest should be kept off the streets for long periods of time in prison.
Well if they can afford to spend £millions criminalising smoking of all things, I don’t they can use money as an excuse.
I don’t need to preach to the choir about why this is so wrong. How far down are we going ? All the way.
‘Tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime’ conforms the leftist conviction that criminals are the true victims ’causes’. What rot – why not ‘Tough on crime’ full stop ?
