There was a time when it snowed in January, here are a couple of pics I took in Ely in 2003 to remind
us. Yet today, it’s warm enough to have a barbie – well almost – with temperatures in double figures. I’ve posted a few more snow scenes at the top of this page for us to remember those good old days.
Do you mourn the passing of winters spent shivering, of ice-covered ponds and snowmen? Do you believe David Attenborough‘s gloomy prediction of blazing hot summers and monsoon winter rains and flooding by 2100 because of climate change?
Do you find Simon’s comment hard to believe that some children in Australia have never seen rain? “Many country towns in NSW have to TRUCK water in because dams are empty. Many children have NEVER seen rain!”
Geoff is this week having to travel to higher and higher attitudes during his snowboarding holiday in the French Alps to find enough snow. I imagine the winter sports industry is having a pretty dire year.
And so are fishermen in the Russian Federation, James notes, who are basking in unwanted springlike temperatures.
I remember an English friend living in California telling me that what she most missed about home was the changing seasons. Who would have thought the same would happen year a few years later.
If the Government, and Conservatives, are keen to embrace global warming, will they take into consideration the long term health implications too, a rise in skin cancer?
Have you missed your frosty winter this year? I certainly have, I still have several bags of coal lined up in my garage for freezing cold days. I so loved those lazy Sunday afternoons sprawled out in front of the fire with my newspapers and freshly cooked toast and crumpets. I also have a couple of sledges in the garage too, who know when they will get used again.
Ellee, I fear you are speaking too soon. I believe we are in for a cold snap.
Remember, when the days get longer the cold gets stronger.
J.Jacobs Form 2b
Jeremy, I have the Sunday Times 6 day forecast in front of me and it’s double figures for every day.
Yes, I miss snow and frost – but only looking at them from a cosy indoors!
Well, yes I miss the cold of winter, as it reduces the slug population and other bugs.
Mind you it has been so long since we have had a proper winter that I think if one came along, it would be a shock to the system. Even if we do get snow it does not last for very long.
Mind you on the upside it does meen we do not get the wonter beds crisis we used to get. (See the latest article on my blog, comments)
So there is a bit of an upside.
However summers that are too hot may be a problem for the elderly as well.
Hi Ellee thanks for the mention. I’ve posted some piccies of today in Les Gets at 1500metres – its dire – http://www.geoffjones.com/2007/01/no-snow-sunday-in-les-gets.html
We are rapidly heading towards a snow free year in Europe if present trend continues.
Ah, Lady Ellee – it does the heart good. It truly was one reason I came here – to get a White Christmas.
El nino.
In New Zealand, my relatives have said that it’s they’ve had the coldest summer temperatures on record. Meanwhile, in India they’ve recently been complaining about the freezing cold nights in normally warm places.
Plus, I don’t know about last year in the UK, but in central Europe it was the coldest for 30 years. Something to put in the old environmentalist pipe and smoke…
Ah, I meant last winter above. In central Europe there was snow and ice on the ground pretty continuously for four months. The contrast this year couldn’t be greater- I’d estimate it at about 6 degrees milder than last year.
As I said, El Nino.
Dear,
Sirs/Madams, & Trudy Lapinskis, I’d be greatful if you’d also take a look at this page from RSD-UK: http://rsd-crps.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=26854&highlight=#26854
I’d also like to know where I could find the minutes for the 1st International Conference on Complex Regional Pain Syndrome for Healthcare Professionals that was held on: Tuesday 5th December 2006 At:

I always remember as a child it snowing on 13 January (8 days before my birthday), but it is ludicrously war. I had to swat a wasp away at the football yesterday. i usually only do that in August.
Very good and interesting idea
On friday we witness a very fierce electrical storm over Sydney. We had a view of the entire Sydney basin. The storm held no rain, yet the humidity, pressure ( my bones were aching like mad) and intensity.. I have never scene before. It was a scene from a Speilberg movie. Friday night, saturday night and last night we could not sleep becasue of this weather, yet its not hot (26c).
Australia really only has 2 seasons- Wet and dry. I miss the wet, cold ones! :o(
Ed:- I think the scientist are talking of weird swings in weather rather than a “constant”. I know its what we are having…
I Loathe the cold, and am thankful for living in northern Australia where we have no cold! I have lived here for nearly 20 years having moved from Melbourne, the sun shines and the sky is blue and the laid back atmosphere work wise is brilliant.
We are supposed to be in our wet season now, no rain as yet, i think Darwin is hogging all the rain!
And there’s been snow in Southern California and in parts of Arizona that don’t ordinarily get any. Yes, it’s been warm this winter in Chicago too — not today — not tomorrow — but in general, warmer than usual. But the weather is all over the board.
I’ll begin accepting that scientists know about climate change just as soon as they can start predicting the weather for tomorrow with 100% consistency.
