I bought a cycle helmet today. I rarely cycle at the moment as most of the roads where I live are very busy trunk roads and do not appeal. But I would like to pedal around my Cambridgeshire villages and explore the country lanes, and will certainly feel safer doing so with my new helmet safely secured on my head.
I bought it from Ben Hayward Cycles who were offering a discount of 25% off the full price in support of Headway Cambridgeshire during this week’s National Brain Injuries Awareness Week at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. They were certainly doing a brisk trade too as a constant stream of hospital staff stopped off to make a purchase.
We had two successful media launches today – one at the Addenbrooke’s with the cycle helmets, and the second in a Cambridge college sports field where Tees Solicitors launched 1,200 balloons as a fund-raiser for the charity I support. Thanks too to BBC’s lovely Amanda Goodman for launching the balloons. Thanks also to Prof John Pickard, Clinical Director of Neurosciences, and Neurosurgeon Peter Hutchinson, for stopping by our stall at Addenbrooke’s.
The use of cycle helmets is a very divisive subject in Cambridge. But at Headway we firmly believe their use is essential. Tom Howes, one of our trustees, is an advocate after his life was saved by wearing one during a hit and run accident.
Andrew Gardner, our CEO, says: “I know this is a very divisive topic in Cambridge, but we have no doubt that the use of cycle helmets is vital in helping save lives and preventing serious injury in the event of an accident. We have first hand experience of working with people who are alive today because they wore a cycle helmet.”
Can you think of a reason not to wear one?
I hope you enjoy cycling safely in your new helmet, Ellee.
Ellee: Very smart decision that I wish everyone would make. Have fun cycling!
only if you’ve just been to the hairdresser’s
Always wear a helmet when cycling.
Went out with Mrs E-K cycling the other day. Hated the main road bit. Three near misses on a two mile stretch. Total disregard from some drivers.
She does it as part of her keep fit. I think it’s bonkers.
One nasty spill and that’s keep fit over for life.
Mixing flesh and bone with large lumps of metal hurling around at 40mph plus is lunacy.
Like you – country lanes and cycle paths only for me.
Kevin, I can visualise you and Mrs E-K riding on a tandem down Sunset Lane 😉
She’ll be behind not pedalling and giving me orders … as usual !
🙂
Yes, I know the helmet will flatten down my hair, but it’s a small price to pay to avoid terrible consequences.
Thank you Michael, all I have to do is plan a ride.
Thank you Welshcakes. I wonder if they are used by Sicilian cyclists.
