I’m thrilled for Janice Small who has been selected as the image Conservative prospective parliamentary candidate for Batley and Spen in West Yorkshire.

We worked together as Conservative regional press officers during the last general election and she was dynamite. She has been unstoppable in her determination for this fantastic opportunity which is a huge privilege, and one I know Janice will do great credit to.

Janice will work hard to claw back this seat back from Labour. Batley and Spen has been represented by Mike Wood since 1997 and has a 6,060 majority. It was held for the Conservatives between its creation in 1983 and 1997 by Elizabeth Peacock. A triumph here is not impossible, especially with Janice’s determination to succeed.

A comment posted on ConservativeHome voiced these concerns: “A bad choice. What does a southerner have in common with the good folk of the West Riding?

“We need gritty, down to earth, plain speaking local folk to represent us. There are enough southern accents in Parliament already!”

But Batley and Spen need have no fear, for there is nobody more “gritty, down to earth and plain speaking” than Janice. She will not let you down.
