Good luck Mr President. You will need more than luck to live up to the high expectations of world leaders who are pinning their hopes on you improving relationships globally, as well as your countrymen who voted for change.
You are expected to be a miracle worker and deliver.
Your qualities, intelligence and ability to connect have inspired millions of Americans who are today witnessing today’s historic inauguration of America’s first black President.
I would have loved to have been there to join in the celebrations.
Having listened to President Obama’s awesome speech, what struck me most was how his words could never be said by Gordon Brown. His tired government has had its day to deliver what it promised and failed. These words which offer so much hope to fulfil so many dreams could only be said by fresh blood with a new vision, energy and determination to succeed:
"For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act – not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together.
"We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield technology’s wonders to raise health care’s quality and lower its cost. We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories. And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age. All this we can do. All this we will do."
I wouldn’t have voted for him if I lived in the US, but I DO wish him lots of luck. It seems that the aspirations on him are just too much.
Tony Blair promised so much, didn’t he ?
Fings – can only get bedd-er …
It is certainly a day to be marked down in history!
I hope he can live up to these expectations for all our sakes.
So many people did make the effort to be there at the historic occasion, despite the cold.

I thought his speech was great, I wondered why the BBC kept on trying to find people to be disappointed with it.
I do think the guy really has his work cut out for him. Even if he is another Abraham Lincoln he is in danger of disappointing people.
Like holidays and Christmases are always so much better in your mind, in the anticipation, than when they actually happen.
My sentiments entirely Ellee. I thought his speech was inspiring and sincerely hope he will live up to all expectations.
Di.
I too would not have voted for him and its interesting to note that though hes spent the last year not discouraging us all to believe hes the new saviour of the world his speech ( not that great ) has started the back peddling .
However it was good to see that in America on the day people across the board turned out at least in some sort of hope that he wont let them down .
Back here our Great Leader got the top job in the most underhand manner , no other person was allowed to stand and we the people had no say whatsoever .
Perhaps we should hope and trust in Obama and ask if we can join them as the next state of the Union .
Think Id vote for it now especially as I agree with the comments in yesterdays papers from America ref Sterling .
What I fail to understand is why the country isnt up in arms after the banks fiasco, Northern Rock, selling all our gold reserves for knock down prices , illiterate children , knife crime , 2 million unemployed . the pension schemes robbed blind ,people loosing their homes again, Mixed sex hospital wards , talk of ID cards ( big Brother )policemen who go into parliament ( invited by the sergeant in arms ( even in Charles 1 times they didnt allow that sort of thing ) I could go on and on , what does it take now in this country to get people fired up enough to see through Browns mantra that its nothing to do with this Labour lot .
By the way sadly your chap ” Dave ” can hardly be described as charasmatic or with any fire in his belly can he and hes far too PC for words to be a proper Tory .
We can only hope and pray that as just before the Second World War Winston was ready in the wings that somewhere out there is the right person to get hold of the terrible ills of this once green and pleasant land.
To be quite honest, I had thought that Obama was nothing more than a placeman, there simply because his colour matched the mood of the moment.
But hearing his proscription of the lobby system today, I think this may be a politician more in touch with the mood of the people than any of the current products of commercial politics.
let’s see!
I thought it was a wonderful speech, beautifully delivered in an almost Bibblical English. Good luck to him, indeed, and may he and his family stay safe.
