Congratulations to Barack Obama, America’s first black president. It is an extraordinary and exciting achievement having persuaded the country with one word – change.
Whatever your politics, his sharp and tireless campaign team must be admired for its incredible strategic tactics which I know political parties in this country – and around the world – will be closely scrutinising.
After 45 years, Martin Luther King’s dream has come true…
It’s a real “occasion” – and they make a good looking family.
Interesting that they wear red, not blue, or even purple!
Awesome
But will he bring about real change
or like Tony Blair will he just become another leader who finds that no matter if you are in the most powerful office on earth, you can do nothing without the say so of advisers and the ok of the republican/conservative establishment
In the land of the free, money is still god!
I backed the winner. I just hope the obvious choice s a good choice.
Shame about the dress :-/
I wish I could agree about fulfilling Dr King’s dream. Had Mr Obama been selected on “the content of his character”, that might be true. Given that he has disclosed nothing of that, has been New Labour-style vague about policies and that the election coverage has focussed mainly on the colour of his skin, I think Dr King would be quite disappointed.
Pip, yes, I agree about the dress.
Obama has inspired and instilled a belief in people’s minds that they matter, that he can bring about changes will improve their lives. Let’s hope he can deliver.
Tom, people believed in the Obama they saw and heard, despite the terrorist slur:

HUZZAH! And let us hope.
A truly great moment but sadly he is taking over at one of the most difficult times in US history and his job is going to be that much harder. I hope he is up to the task, for all our sakes.
It’s all quite wonderful for all of us outside the US, too.
Well lets all hope that its not style over substance .( or simply if you have a very large purse you can do most anything for a short while )
We are living in very dangerous times , its not the time to think that you can solve many of the terrors that we face simply by telling the world that your a nice guy who wants to understand them .
Looks as if the Russians are already starting to kick off to challenge his mettle and it was reported that the US defence people were warning before the election that there would be a strong likelyhood of a terrorist attack either in the States or a US friendly nation ( Britain ?) again to see his reaction.
I wouldnt have voted for him nor John McCain .
I have no idea what Obama is about but fear the worse and McCain was all over the place and sadly 10 years too late .
Neither told the truth about just how bad things are .
I fear a lot of people are going to be mighty disappointed when the harsh truth dawns on them .
Only the future will show whether he is capable. We don’t want the US to have a Blair-type leader.
Isn’t that a great picture? Let’s hope things really do change for the better.
Obama (like Tony Blair here ten years ago) appealed to the new generation the 18-30 voters
And the majority voted for change (and possibly belatedly against the war on Iraq. Bye bye Blair, bye bye Bush)
MLK’s dream may have been realised, but there is still plenty of time for Obama to get things wrong and set the civil rights movement back a good few decades.

No, MLK’s dream has not been fulfilled – that great man urged us to judge a man by the ‘content of his character’ not the colour of his skin. Obama used the racial tensions in the USA to silence critics and tarnish them with the slur of racism. The content of Obama’s character will become all too evident in the coming months and years. We are still some distance from realizing the goal set for us all by the great Dr King.
Obama has poise. (Did Blair?) I believe he will remain calm in the face of adversity – a RARE quality, what the world needs. Be glad – because if America can regain her respect, we will all be the safer for it. The fact he has charisma too is our gain: it will help him get the world on his side. The fact he is mixed race, neither black nor white, is a plus. Obama’s ‘style’ is the start; the substance will follow.
As for the DRESS, it’s original, fashionable, beautiful all in one. How can you not like it!!
Grrrrr.
Wow, you’re a cynical bunch, how British. Did anyone hear MLK’s sister on the radio today?
pinkadora, you’ve got it in one! No, I didn’t hear the radio interview with MLK’s daughter, but will listen out for it.
