First he wows Lady Thatcher, then make
Mariella Frostrup come over “all unncessary”.
How many more women can Gordon Brown woo in the run up to the increasingly imminent election?
I wonder if he has been following advice given in The Statesman which pointed out that Gordon the female vote decides elections, he needs more than a make over and won’t win unless he learns to speak a different language.
“It is a fact now universally acknowledged that Gordon Brown will not get his own mandate for No 10, and Labour cannot win a fourth general election, unless he wins the major share of the female vote.”
Benedict Brogan quotes Brown’s allies as saying Labour’s recent 11-point lead was because of the support of women, attracted by the ‘bread and butter’ issues such as education, health and gun.
If that is the case, which planet has these women been living on? Just consider our hospital’s failing hygiene standards, young children who are struggling to write , in fact British children are among the unhappiest and unhealthiest in Europe, we also fail many of our elderly citizens, and don’t forget our pensions disaster. Gun crime has increased steadily over the last decade.
Let’s hope these women come to their senses.
…the female vote decides elections…
Strange, Ellee – I thought the voters decided these things. 🙂
That Frostrup inerview seems so artificial and contrived. More of those will lose him the election!
I know Elle, he does seem to be turning on the charm. If power is said to be second only to money when it comes to the appeal factor, Gordon is definitely the banjer extraordinaire (chandellor of the exchequer for 10 years) and the brown bounce is turning him into a statesman growing more & more confident in his own (skin) suit.
Personality-wise, I think Cameron has got a struggle on (though he may appeal to younger ladies or the younger generation), Gordon is looking as solid as a rock.
I think it’s going to take a major political or economic disaster to shift GB from office.

lol Elle, State Pensions?
British children unhappy because of a labour government or an overdose or ipod and x-box?
Gun crime Elle, I wouldn’t blame that on the government. I’d blame it on the fact that there are more guns available – it is a sign of the times – and the guns & gun crime would be here whichever government had been in power for the last 12 years. It’s the police that have to deal with this problem and ‘culture’
But I do agree that NHS hospitals failing hygiene standards because of bizarre priorities by ‘Thatcherite’ managers, and the haemorrhaging of NHS resources to the private sector is a VERITABLE disgrace. Shame on Blair.
Before anyone says anything, I think lady’s man should have been spelt ladies’ man.
Q9, Why do young people think they can get away with gun crime? Do you remember the shooting of Rhys Jones?
Put it down to his soft Scottish vowels and his sexy lazy eye.
Elle, nature vs nurture
If you live (literally) on the streets
and it’s the only way you can get ‘ahead’
live fast die young, die young stay pretty.
I don’t condone gun crime, and I’m glad we have different gun laws from the US. But whether it’s guns or knifes – once people (whether young or not so young) lose respect for life and lose the fear of prison – there’s no turning back … whether in Afghanistan, Palestine, Manchester or Birming-ham.

Here’s thinking of you.
Well said. There is far too much pressure on women nowadays and the smart retort is to sneer and say it’s all their own fault for fighting against the yoke of prejudice.
I was born in the days when women who were not born rich still had to prostitute themselves to get a roof over their head if they could not secure their fathers protection into adulthood. To fight to be paid the same money as a man for the same job is not stupid and nor should that fight for justice deserve ridicule. To fight against domestic violence and rape in the marriage bed was a worthy cause. We just have new fights today – the fight against unintended consequences perhaps. The right to end a miserable or abusive marriage has ended in men being less willing to commit. And I think the role of housewife has been devalued – a most important role and one that should have great value is seen by some men today as a cop-out. Financial pressures are great, of course, but in my experience some men see a woman not employed outside the home as a lazy burden. So women work outside the home, then come back and still perform most of the household chores and childcare. There are exceptions but so many wives I know are just exhausted. Physically we are the weaker sex and these women try so hard, often they have to as their men have up and left for a younger model without the demands of family life. The push to get women into paid employment is, in my view, often stupid for many reasons: I think some children would fare better with the mothers attention rather than being pushed into nursery care. I think some marriages buckle under the weight of both parents so stressed by the persuit of money. I think private life needs time and care, attention and protection that people nowadays just don’t have – the society that mothers at home attract is beneficial. Caring for elderly relatives or the sick is much more cheaply done, and done better, by an adult relative with a little time to spare, time they certainly couldn’t find if employed as well as having to manage and care for a family.
Labours policies of child care, housing, interest rates/financial, education, benefits, etc etc, create a society. That society would probably be more hostile to women under the present opposition but could still be improved under this government.
And I think the role of ‘housewife’ should be given greater value.
I don’t think you can blame all the disasters in your last paragraph on Labour, Ellee. The decline started with that abominable Thatcher woman.
