After waiting 13 years for his moment of glory, why must Gordon Brown wait another 42 days before he can become Prime Minister? What is the reason for this delay?

Agree -Now that it’s confirmed, what’s the point of waiting? It can’t be any good for the country.
It’s not about the country. It’s about Labour. During the interregnum, Blair can soak up more unpopularity while Brown gently distances himself. Psychologically, they are trying to manipulate us into thinking this Party stitch-up is a genuine new beginning. I don’t think it will work.
Elle, it may have something to do with TB really being unable to come to ‘grips’ with relinquishing power.
Plus wanting to squeeze the last ‘penny’ or paycheck as PM to cover his summer holidays.
After all the lecture tour doesn’t start till a bit later on in the year
Given that TB said he would stand a full term prior to the last election, at least that was my understanding, it has always seemed disingenuous to me that somewhere in the middle of it GB is up for ‘election’ as PM. Most of us have nothing to say on this matter. Given that Gorgon is standing on what seem a whole raft of new policies isn’t it right that we should have?
“Tony Blair last night reshaped the landscape of British politics by announcing that he will fight the coming general election and, if re-elected, serve a full third term as prime minister, but stand down before the likely election of 2009” ist October Michael White in the Guardian
As I’ve thought about it more it’s actually made me quite angry.
The Interregnum…

Perhaps there are skeletons in the cupboard?
Maybe it’s simply because TB as a resignee instead of someone who was voted/thrown out gets to pick his day to leave?
The question should be “Why did they pick a successor 42 days early?”
