If Richard Branson is so keen to promote environmentally friendly holidays, why not buy
a showcase island closer to home than the Caribbean? Won’t the negatives associated with long haul flights undo any of the positives from staying in his carbon neutral holiday resort?
I would have been far more impressed if Branson had looked to Europe, especially the UK, to demonstrate to wider audiences the message he wants to get across, to make it as accessible as possible to us lesser mortals. Why should this kind of holiday be a luxury item? The sort of person who can afford it will probably have three or four holidays a year at least and live a high carbon lifestyle.
If the island of Moskito in the British Virgin Islands lives up to its name, I would get eaten alive, so maybe it is just as well it is out of my reach. Carbon free holidays are nothing new anyway, I shall look forward to my next one with pleasure – camping.
Just to say I totally agree with you, Ellee!
Hi Elle, interesting job
I’m a Cambridge Green, but could perhaps be persuaded to go conservative Green – lol!
Having envronmentally free holidays and a fleet of aircraft and trains is an odd combination.
Jean Luc – absolutely. Much of Branson’s profits were based on mass air travel.
Isn’t the whole issue of carbon off-setting wromg anyway. It allows you to continue with your behaviour and then to pay a bit of money to supposedly offset any carbon emissions. Does it do anything to change that initial behaviour… NO.
Ellee, I do agree – but I have a dilemma; I have had carbon-free travels for many years – at least I THINK I have – standby so no demand ?!(Hmm) Now that is coming to an end I have to be less smug and start really considering the options; its very hard , as I detest cold wet weather (being Irish) Still working on setting up my blogroll – I am optimistic..
janejill, we should be having hot summers here, by all accounts.
There are plenty of unspoiled islands in the Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland. But you’d need your parka…
Just think of the revenue that Sir Richard earns for the exchequer from the airport tax paid by his airline customers….
Ok then – I will give England 5 years and if it isn’t 25 deg for five months of the year, then I will not feel so guilty in my little patch nearer to the Equator . – I’m not hard to please
