With the future of our post offices under threat, I’m wondering how long
it will be before they are based at Tesco stores up and down the country.
This will be the perfect cop-out for Tony Blair, he can continue to ignore the plight of rural communities struggling to survive without facilities by claiming there is a post office on every street corner – at Tesco.
It seems like Blair is already brushing off a petition signed by 4 million people, that the service has been deliberately run down and their future does indeed look bleak.
Meanwhile, I predict that Tesco’s profits will continue to soar, their logo “every little helps”, will mean that they are lining their shareholders’ pockets even more.
Btw, retailers in Thailand defied martial law and took to the streets for a demo this week to protest against Tesco’s expansion plans there. This was a particularly brave step as the military imposed a ban on protests after seizing power in a coup last month.
Agree with your point here Ellee. They will give the offices to Tesco, at a cost of millions in compensation. Then in a couple of years they will decide the business is ‘non-core’ and sell-it off or float it again as seprate business. It will be all very pointless…
Cityunslicker, I don’t see Tesco making a failure of it, it will just strengthen their hold in the retail market even more.
I have always said that the big four/five chains are a virtual food cartel- for a fright read J G BAllard’s Kingdom Come- when the supermarkets and consumerism run unchecked.
Post offices in Tesco? Sounds great to me.
The retailers of Thailand sound like an interesting bunch. Military dictatorship they can live with, but threaten them with a Tesco next door…
Giving the post offices to Tesco is obscene. Is this something that Blair will be rememvered for?
Tesvco are likking off small traders, especially in rural communities.
Good on Tesco if they can get the gig.
Woffle, your comment had me laughing out loud.
More interesting to me was who was running Tesco.
I tried to renew a Tesco car insurance policy this morning. Their machine informed me that they record calls so I hit my Asterisk button and also recorded the conversation. Seems fair. To my astonishment, when I advised them of the recording they told me it was their policy to not permit customers to record calls. They then hung up the phone.
This asymmetry seems bizzare. Without a recording I have absolutely no proof that the call occurred for two days until the documents arrive.
I just hate corporate bullies.
I can provide a copy of the recording if you want!
