David Blunkett is now seeing that what goes round comes round. A prison chief he criticised in his diaries has retaliated by describing how the former Home Secretary behaved hysterically during a prison riot, urging
him to call in the Army and “machine gun” inmates in order to retain control, apparently with no regard for possible loss of life among staff or prisoners.
This is an extraordinary allegation, and I’m sure many others will be dishing the dirt on Blunkett when the time is right. It will be pay back time for those Ministers he rubbished publicly.
Although Blunkett’s outrageous remarks were not taken seriously, the former director-general of the prison service, Michael Narey, believes Blunkett’s response to a crisis was the least competent compared to three others he worked closely with – Michael Howard, Jack Straw and Charles Clarke.
It it hadn’t been for Blunkett’s doomed love affair with Kimberly Quinn, I doubt there would still be a shred of public interest in his lonely life. He has alienated himself from his colleagues. He really should summon any remaining dignity he has and step down from political life. In many ways he was remarkable to have achieved what he did with his disability, but ended up with his credibility in tatters due to his poor judgement and lack of self-control.
It’s all great gossip though isn’t it?!
His remarks (if he did indeed make them, which personally I don’t believe he did) were not that outrageous! I wonder how many of the general public would have come up with a similar idea!
Chris, I understand all Blunkett’s comments were recorded on a tape, so that is difficult to dispute. Blunkett should have shown loyalty to his colleagues.
Blunkett used to be very highly respected in getting where he did with his disability, but in truth he is a poor politician who can ‘lose it’ at times.
If there was any doubt that he hadn’t gone totally bonkers at the time of all that stuff about the “little lad”, here’s the proof. They get into an unreal world, our rulers, so is it any surprise that they behave in an unreal way.
Blunkett has proven to be a nutter. Most of all as you point out Ellee, he has no idea about media control.
This cost him in office and surely it must have cost him most of his friends and associates by tnow with this latest ‘serialisation.’
A lesson to everyone, consider your thoughts and publish when appropriate; revenge is a dish best served cold.
Can’t help thinking that there is more than enough material hear for a great Shakespear play ( if he wasn’t dead of course ).
Man in a Shed, what a brilliant idea, you couldn’t make it up, could you? Which actor would you line up to play Blunkett?
