David Blunkett is now seeing that what goes round comes round. A prison chief he criticised in his diaries has retaliated by describing how the former Home Secretary behaved hysterically during a prison riot, urging him to call in the Army and “machine gun” inmates in order to retain control, apparently with no regard for possible loss of life among staff or prisoners.

This is an extraordinary allegation, and I’m sure many others will be dishing the dirt on Blunkett when the time is right. It will be pay back time for those Ministers he rubbished publicly.

Although Blunkett’s outrageous remarks were not taken seriously, the former director-general of the prison service, Michael Narey, believes Blunkett’s response to a crisis was the least competent compared to three others he worked closely with – Michael Howard, Jack Straw and Charles Clarke.

It it hadn’t been for Blunkett’s doomed love affair with Kimberly Quinn, I doubt there would still be a shred of public interest in his lonely life. He has alienated himself from his colleagues. He really should summon any remaining dignity he has and step down from political life. In many ways he was remarkable to have achieved what he did with his disability, but ended up with his credibility in tatters due to his poor judgement and lack of self-control.
