I’m not sure what David Cameron will make of George Galloway’s unexpected declaration of his support, no doubt he will enjoy a wry smile.
Whether you love him or loathe him, or just appreciate a laugh at the expense of the controversial Respect MP/Big Brother joker, he makes some salient points:
“He is doing and saying the right things. His job is to slay the ghost of Margaret Thatcher. The more [Norman] Tebbit and Co attack him, the better. That just demonstrates to the public there’s something new about the Tories. I don’t myself think there is anything new, but Cameron is at least providing the illusion of change.”
I don’t share Galloway’s views about Thatcher. And who would have thought that Galloway would have “respect” for Cameron! But at least Cameron can rest assured that his message is getting through and that Galloway isn’t sticking needles into a wax model of him.
I’m afraid I’ve got no time for Galloway. It’s perhaps a childish attitude of mine to ignore someone just because you don’t like them, but even listening to him makes me depressed.
Thanks to your link, I just discovered that Galloway is pals with Castro and is promoting a new book singing his praises. I didn’t know about this side of Galloway – another side I wish I’d never come across.
If I was Cameron I’d feel a bit uneasy, and think to myself, “What am I doing wrong?” if I received any praise from Galloway.
Yes, I too was a bit surprised by Gorgeous George’s remarks in praise of the leader.
Really, Galloway is a total nutter without any credibility. The rest of his interview on BBC1 today was so funny as he basically asked for Sharia law in the UK!
DC I am sure will ignore him as his loony views deserve.
I agree it’s very strange, you couldn’t make it up, could you. I expect Cameron will be just as bewildered by it, but it’s the unexpected that makes politics such fun.
Inreasingly I wonder whether the Far Left are in fact the tiger that the Islamic lobby is riding rather than vice versa…
I don’t think anyone would want to be praised by George in case they thought others shared his wacky views.

agree with John East – I think David Cameron seems quite likable actually. Yes, this praise from GG, would worry me slightly.
There’s nothing gorgeous about George Galloway. He’s vile and is in the same camp as Mel Gibson.

I share Galloway’s views about Cameron – and it seems that so do most of the public and most of the Conservative Party.
Evidence? Well, when David Cameron stood for party leader he was largely unknown. He made a speech in which he toyed with the Thatcherite mantra (‘There’s no such thing as society…’) (A Clause 4 movement if ever there was one) and soon enjoyed a surge in support and popularity. This confirmed what I’d thought before the leadership contest – the members of the Conservative Party were desperate for a new direction.
Since then Cameron’s poll ratings have increased steadily. But this has been a direct consequence of him positioning himself further away from Margaret Thatcher. Cameron publicly comdemned the Tories’ response to the African National Congress – his poll rating increased; Cameron publicly clashed with Margaret Thatcher over the UK’s ‘slavish’ alliance with US neo-cons – his poll rating increased; Cameron said it was time to make the Conservatives the party of the public sector – his poll rating increased.
The message is clear – the furhter Cameron positions himself from Thatcher, the more the public like him.
But the question remains, how far must he position himself from Thatcher before he can win an election? I think he has alot further to go; I don’t think he’ll win without little-short of a public apology for the Thatcher eighties.
