We are back at Great Ormond Street Hospital today, David has just had one week of pain since our last appointment, let’s see what the tests come up with today, though his progress certainly looks promising, just very slow as he has been taking very strong antibiotics for a year now which are turning his bones yellow.
There is so much I would have like to have said today had I had time. I was very impressed with David Willett’s plan suggesting teachers should have anonymity when they are accused of abusing pupils, facing the ordeal of court cases in the full glare of the media, mostly unfounded. Only 69 out of almost 1,800 such complaints over a ten year period led to a conviction, yet these allegations can have a devastating impact on the teacher’s future life.
We need to do all we can to support our teachers, many of them have a tough enough time dealing with disruptive pupils and, of course, meeting targets and worrying about league tables.
Dear Ellee, I hope the appointment went well. I feel for you and your so as my father had the same disease and I know how painful it can be.
As an ex-teacher, thank you for your comments. I got so sick of our profession always being criticised in the media; you feel “sandwiched” as you are being told to “F off” and worse all day by pupils and you can just about deal with that but then you go home and read the papers and it is all too much.. I ended up dreading going to work and believe me, I was someone who wanted to give my life to education – and did, for many years. And now there is this latest thing of teachers being accused of abuse right, left and centre. For those who are guilty there should be no quarter of course but many others have their lives destroyed by sheer maliciousness. It seems to me that it is the caring teachers who leave.
The anonymity idea is a great one. Also all names should be anonymous in a rape case (man and woman) until guilt is proved.
About the flu vaccine in the earlier post; my father will thankfully get his on 26th Oct.
This just confirms what I half suspected – that I’ve stumbled across a thoroughly nice person. This is also the sort of thing which has happened since I began blogging and I give thanks for it.
Ellee, I hope it all went well today.
I agree with you about the teachers.
Thank you all, it went pretty much as I expected. David will have to stay on the same antibiotics for another 3 months due to his relapse in the summer, which indicates the infection is still invasive. After that, he will have a scan and maybe come off them.
David is something of a shopaholic and afterwards dragged me along Oxford Street, half complaining I was really too old to go shopping with him, too old fashioned (what a cheek!), but then really keen for my opinion. I guess that’s teenagers for you.
