I can’t imagine a Christmas without family. It’s become a ritual that we spend Christmas Day with my sister in my home town of Wisbech and everyone visits me on Boxing Day. We try to gather as many of the family together as possible.

But it’s each to their own as I have three friends who have decided against a family Christmas Day. One couple in London (with grown up children) plan to drive to the south coast for a walk along a favourite beach. Another couple (with young children) plan to pack up a picnic and head out into the quiet countryside. And the third couple (no children) prefer to spend their festivities bird watching on the North Norfolk coast.

Paradoxically, a man I spoke to in my local post office this week told me Christmas meant nothing to him because he has no family.

So whichever way you plan to spend Christmas, do enjoy it, try to relax as well, and I wish you every happiness.
