I’m looking forward to learning some new social media tips today from a whole galaxy of blogosphere stars. Or at the very least, some illuminaries.
It is the th
ird year running I have attended this great event, which is now being flagged as the Social Media Influence, but kicked off originally as Blogging4Business.
Here is a question that caught my eye on the organiser’s blog, is it possible to be unGoogleable? It’s a good catchy title, something we may all like to know, and the last paragraph of his story gives away the answer…
Here is a list of the speakers, some old favourites and a few new ones, and the agenda‘
Then the best will follow – meeting a new blogging friend for the first time, the very talented Michelle Tempest.
However busy I am, and tell myself I should pack up blogging, this is one very good reason not to…
Ellee: I checked out your buttons to this event and I feel that you will meet some very interesting people! Have FUN along the way!!!
So many words. I usually try to translate them and if they’re still interesting they have my attention and if not it’s fun anyway: Emma needs to brush her hair before having her photo taken, used to sell cars and now sells coffee. Lee had very few friends when he was a child so became a nerd and learned lots of words with many syllables that mean very little but sound impressive. He still doesn’t get out much but is now rich.
Lee creates “‘headshift moments’ for your people” exactly what does that mean, Ellee?? Hope you’re going to enlighten us when you come back and tell us all about it. Have a great day.
Alas, no.
If only there were a “GPS” (Google Preference Service), like Telephone Preference Service (TPS) or ex-directory!
Dr. Michelle is a favorite of mine and I am happy she is back blogging.
What you are attending sounds intriguing and I look forward to hearing more.
Oh, and I have ‘Googled’ you. Hope you don’t mind.
I met Lilith, Elby and Pig yesterday. It was brilliant !
They are both fantastic company and Pig is a lovely little dog (I’d brought a marrow bone for him which he was preoccupied with)
I still can’t believe it all happened.
Thanks for my birthday wishes.
xx
You can certainly unGoogle your own site (or bits of it).
Search engines have 2 sides – the side that you see where you search for pages, and the site you don’t see where the search engine builds up it’s index (known as the spider).
When the spider reads your website, the first thing it should do (and Google, MSN and Yahoo do) is to read a file called robots.txt. This file tells the search engine which pages (or directories) to ignore. There’s a few other tricks too.
If you put your whole site in there, after a time, Google will remove your site.
Sounds really interesting 🙂
I had a series of disasters in getting there, all my fault. To start with, I overslept and missed the train I had planned to catch. Then I left the directions for the conference centre which I had printed out on my desk at home and was twittering to Geoff about it when I jumped on the wrong train, desperate to get a seat as well. I ended up standing and arriving at a totally different destination. I have never in my life before caught the wrong train.
I ended up at Stansted Airport and was directed by guards back to Cambridge to catch the King’s Cross train without being told I could travel on to Liverpool Street. There was a 40 min delay before it left, and then at Cambrdige, another 30 minute wait. I eventually arrived at the conference at 11.45, having set off from my home at 7.15 for a one hour train journey.
I enjoyed meeting up with Neville Hobson again at the conference, one of the best social media guys around,if not the best.
And a bonus was meeting Michelle and sharing a glass of wine on the terrace at the House of Commons.
But you haven’t answered the question?
I try really hard to be unGoogleable – well the real me/blogger me. Obviously my work self is Googleable. But I try to keep the two separate. No idea if I succeed or not. But any further tips to preserve anonymity and stop people tracking me down in my private domain would be good. I have made my blog ungoogleable but I guess that’s all really – well, other than not using my name and things.
I followed your disasters on Twitter – it was rather amusing!!
Looking forward to hearing all about it, Ellee.
Reluctant blogger, the answer is in the bottom of the report in the link, it’s a no.
I’m glad you enjoyed my Twitter disaster. I was sorry to have missed a couple of good sessions at the conference, but the rest of the day made up for it.
Welshcakes, yes. there are a couple of posts I would like to write. I’ve had a frantic day and have refrained from blogging as it is so distracting. Tomorrow is pretty much the same, but I hope to get to them soon.
Cool.
Never stop blogging!
That’s an event I would like to go to.
I guess one can be ungoogleable
After all if one has a familiar blog name or post title, it may be a long way down the line
But if you call a blog **((^^))**azxy4charlie
it may be hard to find in google,
unless people can copy paste the address
If you mean contentwise, well it seems censorship was one of the things google promised to throw out of the window
Wouldn’t I love to go to that event and I would certainly love to meet Michelle who was so supportive when I first started blogging.
I hope you found the conference rewarding Ellee.
